Before you can ever redeem any of the codes, you'll be required to get to Inter-Knot Level 5—something easy enough that you can manage it early on in the game. (Hint: Sometimes the game will try to call it "Proxy Level 5," but they mean the same.)
As opposed to with a few of the other HoYoverse games, you can access your in-game mailbox from the get-go, so you won't need to unlock it beforehand. Rewards from redeemed codes will be deposited there directly. After they're redeemed, they'll be held in your inventory, or your wallet if they're items like Dennies or Polychromes.
If rewards don't work immediately, try restarting the game. Remember that a single code is redeemable only once per account.

How to redeem in-game
Open main menu (PC: press ESC on keyboard or mouse, PS5: press Options, mobile: tap menu button).
Select More.
Press Redemption Code.
Enter an active code.
Tap Redeem.
Find your reward in your game mailbox.

Log in to your HoYoverse account.
Select your server and enter the nickname for your character.
Enter your code and redeem.
Confirm your game mail for your rewards to be delivered.
In-game, you can get Bangboo through the banner system, but in contrast to Agents, they don't drain your precious Polychromes—a crucial in-game resource. That leaves you able to keep your Polychromes intact for summoning new characters or gearing on your Battery (energy system).
